Workshops can be taught on a wide range of practical textile techniques including hand and free machine embroidery, mixed media textile applique and stitch, hand felting, tapestry weaving, batik dyeing and screen printing. Workshops on drawing for textile design, tutorial based mentoring or portfolio development are also available.
Thursday 3rd June 2021 Textile Applique and Stitch Workshop Layered Landscapes 1 day workshop 10.00-3.00
Using inspiration from the beautiful landscape views at Sussex Prairie Gardens learn how to abstract and simplify complex shapes and visual information by creating layered fabric ‘collage’ using applique and reverse applique techniques. We will then go on to add texture and detail using hand and /or machine stitch. Produce samples for sketchbook or framing as artwork.
Workshop costs £70 per person including materials and garden access.

Wednesday 30th June/Thursday 1st July 2021 Batik Wax Resist and hand Painting with Natural Dyes 10.00-3.00
• Introduction to batik techniques, equipment and materials
• Using inspiration from the gardens create a range of suitable marks, patterns and design ideas with tutor guidance
• Experiment with a range of styles and colours to produce a series of creative samples on paper and fabric
• Review and discuss the results and direction for a larger more focused piece on day 2
• Create a design plan for a cotton or silk scarf or panel
• Work on a larger piece with more time and focus to develop your skills and work with colour and natural dyes re-waxing and over-dyeing to create a layered and beautiful final piece

Wednesday 14th July 2021 Hand Paint and Stitch Workshop :Plant and Garden Inspired 10.00-3.00
Using inspiration from the stunning and colourful array of plants at Sussex Prairie Gardens learn how to focus on a small section of the gardens to create a design idea and translate this into a beautiful textile artwork for sketchbook or to frame. Hand painting with fabric dyes will form a base for further areas of stitched detail. No previous textile experience necessary but the opportunity for experienced textile practitioners to extend their skills.

General Information Regarding 2021 Workshops at Sussex Prairies
For all workshops Covid secure measures and guidance will be in place. Group sizes will be limited to ensure social distancing and a safe working environment with patio doors to the garden can be opened along the length of the room to allow good ventilation. Saturday 15th August 2020 Stiching natural surfaces & objects Workshop Sussex Prairie Gardens. The workshop is 10am-2pm £55 and includes materials, free entry to the gardens. It is a creative and experimental introduction to using simple stitches; couching, whipping stitch, straight and running stitch, as well as exploring ways to trap, wrap and bind natural fragments with materials like silk fibre and /or transparent fabrics or scraps of naturally dyed materials. We will be working with leaves, stems, bark, petals and other plant materials or small objects that can be sourced at the gardens.
Monday 3rd August 2020 Batik with Natural Dyes Workshop Sussex Prairie Gardens. The process will be easy for beginners or can be layered in a more complex way for those who have worked with batik before. Using cotton and silk materials you will practice using a range of tools to mark a wax resist design onto cloth. You will explore hand painting with natural pigments and dip dyeing with natural dyes.
10am-2pm Workshop £55 per person including materials will take place at Sussex Prairie Garden, Morlands Farm, Wheatsheaf Road, Henfield, BN5 9AT.
